Adapting to Change: Hiring Summer Vacation Staff

Finding summer job staff is a pretty tough task nowadays, but there may be a way to make it a little easier.

If you’re finding it hard to recruit summer staff, then don’t worry too much – you’re not the only one. Many companies that traditionally received many summer job applications are now struggling to find teens to fill these roles. In one article, a fast-food restaurant owner said: “Hiring has been more challenging in the last two years than probably the previous 10.”

According to research, there has been a general decline in the number of teens looking for summer jobs over the years, and this is by and large due to teenagers signing up to summer classes, or focusing more on education generally, rather than looking for jobs. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to get easier anytime soon. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that this trend will continue at least until 2024.

Since there doesn’t seem to be an end for this trend in sight for now, how is your business adapting to this change? Some employers are trying to change tactics and have offered incentives to attract and retain staff. But once potential recruits are attracted to your job advertisement, what’s the easiest way to get them to take action and to organize the applications that you’ll receive?

Teenagers typically spend a lot of time online and they generally want things to happen – now! So an easier way to retain their attention would be to get them to apply online, rather than go through the tedious task of printing out an application form then having to send it back somehow.

Furthermore, rather than manually organizing your interview schedules once you’ve received applications, why don’t you set up a schedule online, where your recruits can sign up to available time-slots to come in for an interview? You and your recruits would know instantly exactly when and at what time the interview would be held, and this would help you to focus on more pressing tasks.

These are more time efficient methods for both you and your recruits, and are great ways to help your business adjust to change.

Partywirks offers a great way for your business to not only reserve parties online, but to also receive applications and schedule interviews.

Knott’s Scary Farm, part of Knott’s Berry Farm, uses our online reservation system to schedule interviews, but since they’re not due to host interviews for now, you’re not able to see how the scheduler works.

Even so, here’s an example of a live application form:
